Co-op cane farmers break through certified sugar market

Two small-scale sugar cane farming co-operatives in KwaZulu-Natal have become the first to produce Fairtrade-certified sugar in South Africa.

Their sugar will – from next month – be used as an ingredient in Cadbury chocolate products, which will bear the international ethical certification symbol. The move was announced last week by Arianna Baldo, executive director of Fairtrade South Africa.
