THE PR INTERN’S SURVIVAL KIT

When entering the PR world as an intern you have to  equip yourself in order to make a lasting impression. Here is my check list of qualities which are vital for your survival:

1. Have a sense of curiosity

Do you often roll your eyes the second you hear the word “research”? Then PR is certainly not for you. What I’m learning through my experience as an intern is that any PR pro needs to have some kind of curiosity. We don’t just draw conclusions about things based on what “it seems to be” but we often enjoy conducting in-depth research to unveil the truth and ensure the most effective results.

Curiosity also implies asking questions. At some point, us students often have the tendency to think that we know it all, but the truth is that every day is an occasion to learn something new. At MANGO-OMC, this is particularly shown during group work or meetings where team members with different expertise assist each other in order to find the most effective solution. This can never happen without PR pros being naturally curious and willing to ask questions.

2. Be talkative but don’t babble
Talkativeness

Although I am certainly not the most talkative person in the world, I have to say that since communication is our field of expertise, we should be able to converse effectively. If you are a babbler though, you best try to tone down your chatting and strive to create meaningful and constructive conversations. That’s the best way to learn from your peers but also to continuously come up with innovative ideas.

3. Be prepared for the unexpected

How do you usually react to the unexpected? Do you freak out or stay cool? Your reaction toward an event often determines its outcome so you should train yourself to remain calm whatever the situation and shout for help whenever you feel like things are getting out of control. This is one of the primary qualities that transform PR pros into superheroes.

4. Follow the right online channels and stay connected.

Research

I will never stop emphasising the importance the vitality of always being connected with everything that is going on around us. Social media platforms are making it more and easier for us to track trends and be informed of the latest news. Take advantage of that and be prepared. Set Google alerts and use Twitter to stay on top of the latest news.
