the importance of planning ahead

- February 10, 2017 -

PR is an extremely fast-paced industry. Future planning and preparation is essential if you want to ensure that your workload doesn’t become unbearable. Luckily, we are in an age where technology can be a huge assistance in terms of planning ahead and scheduling.

I had a firsthand experience of how important forward-planning is in this industry. Recently, I went on one week’s leave, which made me realise that it is imperative to prepare your team for any long period of absence. I had to ensure that all my tasks were complete or up to date, as well as trying to complete certain tasks ahead of schedule to ensure that my absence would have as little impact on my team members as possible. With the help of various tools, I was able to map out exactly what tasks needed to be done when, what I could schedule in advance and what other team members needed to be briefed to take over while I was away.

In PR, time management is very important as the workload can sometimes become overbearing. This is why forward planning is an important aspect of time management, and it should be done with a precise and clear mind so that you do not forget any important details.

As long as you are able to list all of your responsibilities in detail before you begin scheduling, planning and preparing in advance should not be a strenuous task. Be sure to make use of the various tools available to you when you are scheduling tasks, as they will contribute to your overall successful forward planning.
